Getting elected again isn't important to most Representatives and Senators.

First, if they don't already have more money than God (a near-requirement to get there in the first place), after one or two terms they (or their "partners") will have enough to live on for the rest if their lives.

Second, post-congressional opportunities for enrichment are numerous for those who go along, AND, once retired, there is zero risk that their bad habits or perversions will ever come into public view.
