Brother of Colorado crash victim slams governor for commuting sentence

Duane Bailey’s brother Bill Bailey was one of the victims in the April 2019 crash. Bailey said Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, the defendant, misrepresented his experience on his job application and "exaggerated job titles,"

"He’s testified he’s panicked. Who wouldn’t be? But, he put himself in that position. It wasn’t an accident," he said.

He called Polis a "despicable human being" for not allowing a new sentencing hearing take place on Jan.13 and accused the governor of using the tragic fires to distract the public from his decision.

Aguilera-Medros, 26, testified that he tried to slam on the brakes to stop his semitrailer hauling lumber on April 25, 2019, but said they failed. Prosecutors focused on his decision not to take any runaway truck ramps while traveling about 85 mph on Interstate 70 west of Denver.

The chain-reaction wreck ruptured gas tanks, causing flames that consumed several vehicles and melted parts of the highway. Those killed were Miguel Angel Lamas Arellano, 24; William Bailey, 67; Doyle Harrison, 61; and Stanley Politano, 69.

The crash occurred while Aguilera-Medros was on a part of the interstate where commercial vehicles are limited to 45 mph because of a steep descent from the Rocky Mountain foothills, according to investigators. The initial impact caused a 28-vehicle chain-reaction wreck.

How vulnerable is Polis in 2022? I don’t hear much about that race, which is usually a sign everyone expects the incumbent to be reelected.

Probably not very vulnerable. The urban hellholes along the Front Range decide the statewide elections now. They used to not be as left-wing, but it’s gotten really bad over the past several decades.

I was surprised the Governor commuted his sentence so quickly.

110 years was ridiculously high, I think 10 years is a bit on the low side (would argue for 20). The appropriate sentence can be a subject of interesting, but academic debate.

He will get bail in 2025. It is in the reduced time he signed. So he will serve only 3 years.

He’s brakes didn’t just fail, the asshole fried them himself.

He didn’t take the truck ramps.

He didn’t even bother to try and slow himself done by hitting the mountain.

He knew what he did was wrong when he closed his eyes just before causing a 28 car accident.

“I was surprised the Governor commuted his sentence so quickly”.

A petition was circulated with an overwhelming number of signatures. The driver was an “immigrant”, so had “immigrant” support piling on.

Petitions are hard for a politician to overlook.

Since Castro took power, Miami has seen an increasing number of overturned trucks. It isn’t mountain roads that cause them.
