Top News: CDC updates COVID-19 isolation guidance, stops short of requiring testing
CDC on Tuesday continued to evolve its recommendations for Americans with COVID-19 infections, allowing for faster returns to work and normal routines. Last week, it shortened the time people should remain in isolation after testing positive from 10 days to 5 days, provided certain criteria are met. On January 4, the agency advised — but stopped short of a mandate — that infected persons should use a rapid antigen test toward the end of the shut-in period to inform next steps. Unlike molecular PCR screens, antigen tests work best for identifying individuals when they are most contagious. Isolation should continue until day 10 if the result is positive, according to CDC, but can be ended at day 5 if it comes back negative. Even if someone comes out of isolation early, officials say travel should be avoided for the 10 days after first testing positive and a well-fitting mask should be worn if travel is unavoidable. “Do not go places where you are unable to wear a mask, such as restaurants and some gyms, and avoid eating around others at home or work until a full 10 days after your first day of symptoms,” the guidance also dictates.
