Despite rave reviews, Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story" has failed to gain traction with audiences at the box office...In its first three weeks in cinemas, the film has captured just $36.6 million in global ticket sales. Its production budget was around $100 million, not including marketing costs.

I am sure it is a fine representation of the story BUT, I refuse to give a penny to anything woke.
It doesn’t matter to me (I was never going to see it anyway); I was just relaying some of the public discussion about it (and the director’s lame-ass comment): Director Steven Spielberg said he refused to use subtitles for the Spanish-speaking scenes in his epic West Side Story remake for the purposes of “inclusivity” and to “respect the language” and to not give “English the power over the Spanish.”
For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t recommend “Schindler’s List” to anyone either.
....and you would know this how?
I'm two years older than your mother and I was 16 when the movie was released.
IMO, this statement, like many you have made about the original AND the recent remake, sound just like the recent words of published reviewers
Fair enough. But it isn’t woke haha. I would love to hear from a Freeper who saw it and thought it was. There was one on this thread who disliked it but only because he preferred the earlier film.
People were saying that at the time weren’t they? I know Pauline Kael was. Did gangs ever really use phrases like “Daddy-O” and “Cut the frabbajabba”? :)
You’re welcome! My passion for this stems from the fact that you get what you pay for. If the only films that get people to theaters are Marvel Comics Theme Park rides then eventually that’s the only thing that will be made. That’s “Bread and Circuses” style decadence.
Born and raised NYC boy here for my first 57 yrs.
Never belonged to a “gang”
“Daddy-o” was an expression used in mid-late 50s
“Flabba” whatever was not. However, neither was “Krup you!” Audiences at that time knew and understood that the language used on the street could not be put on the screen. So other made-up words were used in their p!ace. Lenny Bruce was arrested for “obscenity” in late 1961! You have to understand the times which obviously you do not.
Once again I say, IMO, you are merely using the words of published reviewers and have me questioning myself for ever bothering with you in the first place.
Arthur Laurents made up a slang patois for the book which was always awkward. The new film finds a naturalistic medium that works much better.
In re Schindler’s List, why not?
It detail centered wokist.
The refusal to have English captions just telegraphs it’s multiple reasons for failure.
The leonardo decaprio version with original language in a big modern city version was an interesting project.
I didn’t think “Schindler’s List” was a good movie.
I saw the movie, also have watched the 60’s version many times.I prefer the original.I did feel cheated by the spanish language without subtitles and feel spielbergs reason counts as being woke.I also think he went too far with the “anybodys” character. In the original she/he was portrayed as more or less a tomboy. In the new version it was blatenly a tranny. That also counts as being woke.I tell everyone I know not to bother seeing it and those are the main reasons why.Im a freeper of many years.
What did you think was the problem with it? It has a few sentimental lapses in the third act but otherwise it’s quite an experience.
Fair enough. The latter was more of a casting thing. If you didn’t know who that was then it wouldn’t really matter would it? And I guess the Spanish just didn’t bother me very much. He just added to the drama and tension.
I just didn’t think it was a good movie; that’s all.
