Senate Hearing on Guantanamo Bay Prison
Military officials, legal experts, and advocates testified at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the ongoing operation of the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Witnesses answered questions on a variety of topics, including legal rights for detainees, national security concerns, closure for the families of the victims of 9/11, and attempts by previous administrations to close Guantanamo. They also addressed the role previously-released prisoners may have played in the Taliban overtaking of Afghanistan’s government during the recent U.S. troop withdrawal from the country. While Democrats argue that holding prisoners uncharged at Guantanamo is an assault against the U.S. judicial system, Republicans say that since the “war on terror” is ongoing, prisoners of war can be held without charges until the war is over.
