When you press for damages, shoot for the moon. You have nothing to lose, and your opponent may screw up and actually meet your demands. It’s like listing a house.

I tend to think you are correct....it’s probably higher than a million but probably doesn’t go past the 10-million point. Had it been 100-million....a high profile person (or two) would have been chopped-up and fired for allowing things to go this wild.
To: mad_as_he$$
Good point. My guess is that it was a low number. Lower than many here want to believe.Even if it were for only 20% {and I don't believe that they'd settle that low} that is still over $50 Million.
Even 5% is over $10 million.
What number are you thinking?

Sandman has never smirked. I saw an interview with him and he has a bad overbite. He keeps his mouth closed because he is self conscious of his crooked teeth.
To: Jonty30
Sandman had nothing to lose and his lawyers were working on contingency. They did not settle for peanuts. It was definitely somewhere in the 8 figure range.

THAT is just a start right?
It’s like listing a house.
Very poor advice.
Every property is unique. The goal when listing and selling is to find the buyer in the current market that wants it more than everyone else. The higher you list a house the fewer the showings and the less chance of finding that buyer. If the house doesn't sell quickly, it can get a market stigma that something must be wrong with it.
A wiser strategy might be to list it right at or slightly below current market value to increase showings and activity. Many times multiple competing offers are received and the house will sell quickly for more than the asking price.

My guess is $2.75 million plus or minus $1 million.
Ten percent of the the original suit request.
However, the wild card is punitive damages. If the party causing injury believes a jury error be sympathetic to the injured, the amount settled for could be higher.

Sorry, meant to say ten percent wouldn’t be unreasonable.
It looks like I’m saying 10% of $275 million is $2.75 million. One percent would be the absolute floor, I’d imagine.

It probably doesn’t exist, but it would be enlightening to see a list of media/news organizations based on how much they have paid out in libel suits due to their lies and slander. I bet I could guess the top three.

Good for Nicholas! Now he doesn’t have to worry about college tuition, if he should choose to go that route.

A lot of law suits also award legal fees to the winner. I would think this would be settled for around $1 million to $3 million. The real win is no admission of being culpable of shoddy journalism by the news agency.

Court judgements are subject to income tax only to the extent that they represent lost earnings, which, for a teenager who wasn’t earing anything to begin with, would be nil in this case.
