Greatest Student Christmas Gift EVER
self | 12/17/2021 | MissEdie

Today I got the greatest gift EVER from one of my students. I am a National Board Certified Special Education Teacher with 21 years experience. Over the years I have gotten a variety of gifts from my students. The kids I work with have disabilities ranging from Autism, Learning Disabilities, physical impairments, etc. Today I got a hug from a student with Autism!!! It was totally spontaneous and totally unexpected. Anyone who has experience working with children or adults with Autism know exactly how special this is!! I am typing this with tears in my eyes and a heart filled by God's Grace. Merry Christmas and God Bless.

If that hug was spontaneous and unforced, I would say you are definitely doing something very right.

Excellent.

A buddy of mine has an autistic son who is completely non-communicative.

3-4 months ago they sent him to a residential facility to see if that would help.

He was crying the other day telling me that his son, who’s 12 or so can now say Yes and No.

Absolutely incredible.

Our son has severe autism. He’s verbal, but I TOTALLY understand what that means!

Near adult special son of a client loves to hug, but most ‘regular’ people avoid him. After meeting the first time, i said “People don’t hug enough, and every time i see you, i need a hug.”

On a bad, rushing day, one farm visit was there, and sure enough, John offered and I received a hug. Yes, it was comforting. And he said, “Not everyone gets hugs”.

With the patience, caring and attention needed to do your job, Yours is a job that few people can do, and even fewer can do well.

It seems like God has placed you where you can do great good. Congratulations and bless you.

They are so very special.

Was talking just a couple days ago about taking my special ed class on a geocaching field trip. The cache was on top of an easily accessible (of course) boulder. One student, hefty 6’ and loved scary movies, was afraid to walk up the boulder but finally decided he could if he held my hand. They give such wonderful moments and memories.

Yes! What a gift! Those children are so Blessed to have you! Bravo and well done!

Years ago, I was working with a class of 4th graders in a foreign country. It was “art time” and the kids were drawing pictures with crayons. There was a completely nonverbal autistic girl in the class (occasionally, she would mouth a little gibberish, never anything that anyone could make out as meaningful or related to anything going on).

As I walked around the classroom talking with the kids about their pictures, I told the little girl what a pretty picture, and asked what color she was using. She was using a pink crayon and to my everlasting surprise, answered “pinkie pink”. In English! Not her first language! And it was objectively meaningful! It never happened again, but for the rest of that day I was on cloud 9!

I could not believe it. Her mother was a third grade teacher at the school and her regular teacher and school principle were good friends of mine. They were amazed as well. We hoped she was having some sort of “ breakthrough”, but as far as I know it was a one-time thing.

She was a sweet little thing, and I still think of her from time to time, wonder about her.
