In recent years, an arms race unlike any since the Cold War has begun to manifest, with the world’s most powerful nations competing to field the first, the most powerful, or the most capable hypersonic weapons.

Hypersonic, while sounding like a term invented for a kid’s TV show about super heroes, relates specifically to traveling at speeds in excess of Mach 5. At such high speeds, even the most modern air defense systems in the world pose little threat to these weapons as they close with their targets.

I think a lot of “hypersonic” talk is a distraction and mongering of fear. The detection and acquisition of Mach 5+ targets isn’t an issue, and objects traveling at those speeds are vulnerable to high energy lasers and clouds of anything over a mass of ~10-100+_ grains you merely blow/disperse in its path.
