Growing up in TX, and being old, I remember it. It had to have the slice of lemon on top.

I worked at a Burger Chef in W TX for two of my college years. On cold evenings we would fill a coffee pot with Dr Pepper and after it warmed up, could be enjoyed by the whole crew. One cold evening our Most Elevated Jefe (PBUH) came in check on the night shift and asked what the pot had in it. He liked it so much that he suggested when the temp outside dropped below 50 degrees that we should put a pot on and offer it as an alternative to coffee.
Exact same in Colorado.
