A thicker plank (or group of planks) in the outer skin of the hull, running in a fore and aft direction, to provide extra stiffening in selected regions.
gunwale
Rarely gunnel. (both /ˈɡʌnəl/)
Generally, the upper edge of the hull. More specifically, in an open (undecked) boat of timber construction, the longitudinal stringer that connects the top of the ribs.
