Japan, despite what some people push, was not on the verge of surrender. They were in fact going to release weaponize and roided up bubonic plague on the world. They had tested it at least twice in China. Each time it caused an epidemic that they controlled by firebombing the area.

An invasion of the main islands of Japan was going to take time to organize. And it would have been slow and painful work.

If we had gone the conventional meat grinder route we took in Europe it would have given them time to release their weapon.

The Atomic Bomb being dropped deprived them of that time.

Two bombers, two bombs, two cities gone.

You can not hope to delay someone who can do that to you long enough to get your own weapon deployed.

They could either surrender or quickly die in the fire.

And still there were those who would have fought on.

It was mostly testing to see if the balloons could get across.

Oh they were contaminated, you never know when you will get lucky, but it was not a serious attempt.

The one in September was going to be quite serious.

Bubonic plague in California and Hawaii. I believe Australia was also targeted.

With all the planes and cargo moving in and out of those locations it would be world wide in days.
