I spent 4-5 years there as a Water Treatment Plant Operator. That would have been the only WTP for the City at that time and the supply was and still is Lake Lewisville. IIRC that Plant was built in 1958.

There’s a copy of the Denton Register with the headline “Russia puts Sputnik in orbit.” Also on the front page was a pic and small article of the Plant construction.
