There are small outbreaks of monkey pox in Africa all the time, and every once in awhile a case or 2 of animal pox caught from pets imported to the US.

Luckily they cause minor illness and don’t spread easily person to person.

The danger is carelessness in storing old smallpox samples in labs, or if a terrorist gets hold of it and releases it.

Now if you really want to worry, google bird flu. There have been several outbreaks in humans who handle or eat infected chickens, but no human to human transmission so far, but it’s just a matter of time.

And new viruses pop up all the time.
