Thank you for sharing. Having spent more time in Southeastern Kentucky than I care to admit to, the song evokes both the strength and hopelessness of life in those hills and hollows.
I spent the night in Harlan, KY. I got out alive just fine, unless I’m dead, which might explain a lot.
Where the sun comes up about ten in the mornin’
And the sun goes down about three in the day.....and that is why you live up on a ridge instead of a holler.
Patty is one of the greatest. Her voice has incredible range.
Find her singing Pretty Polly with Bill Monroe on YouTube if you need proof.
The series ‘Justified’ (set in Kentucky) had the song in one episode. Loveless does a fine version.
‘Justified’, is a fine TV series, in my top 10 TV shows, worth a look for sure.
If you haven’t watched Justified, highly recommend it.
This is the theme song.
Wow mind blowing! Thanks for posting, I love her.
Thanks for posting this…one of my favorite ever songs and versions…Patti Loveless is magnificent in this performance…my father, uncles, granddads and farther back were coal miners in rural Tennessee…hard tough people…not looking for a government handout…I’m very proud of the Scots/Irish blood that runs in my veins…

A number of years ago Mr G recorded Darrell Scot singing this live. It was great.
Me - Barbara, it’s been awhile since we dated. Want to go to a Patty Loveless concert?
Barbara - no, for two reasons
Me - what’s the first reason?
Barbara- I’m sick
Me- you’re always sick. What’s the second reason?
Barbara- I’m married now
Me - why couldn’t we have started with that one?
