In 1992 they called it “magic spelling”. Our daughter was in first grade and wanted to get things right especially writing. The teacher would say it’s OK, spell it however you want. Daughter comes home from school and says, “Mommy, I don’t think Miss Xxxxx knows how to spell.”

My daughter had a 6th grade teacher that told her that Saint Patrick's Day commemorates Saint Patrick saving the potato. (A NoVa school in 2001!) The woman was serious ! I know she was because I later asked her at a parent-teacher conference ! Her mannerisms and facial expressions were not of one joking but of one who thought that was a correct fact.
