My Guitar teacher in the late 60’s must have been a big fan. I think Sunny was one of the first songs he taught me.

I mixed up stories. I meant to post the NPR link. The title was from NPR but the story link was DownBeat. The NPR story link is below and a little more detailed.

Oh now, one of my fav’s.
The Pat Martino Trio version of Sunny with John Scofield (Joey DeFrancesco and Byron Landham - Umbria Jazz 2002) is just really cool.

He was good in Happy Days and as the guy in the movie who trains the kid in chop suey.... : )

Thanks for posting this. I hadn’t heard any of the Pat Martino story until now. As a kid I used to read about different guitar players in Guitar Player magazine. Somewhere along the line I bought his 1976 Joyous Lake album. It’s good!

My wife and I went to see him at the Blue Note in Fukuoka , Japan about 15 years ago . It was just after he released Remember: A Tribute to Wes Montgomery . I got an aisle seat near the dressing room . I turn my head to the right and I see him walking out on his way to the stage . Reached out my hand to shake his and he shook it . Phenomenal performance . R.I.P.
