Joe can send troops if he decides to. He is the President until removed.

True. He can say he is committed to doing this.

But there is no US commitment to do it.

Biden could change his mind, a different president could decide not to etc..

Nothing commits the U.S. to defend Taiwan in the way the former mutual defense treaty did.

Contrast to Japan where the US is committed to defend Japan.

My point is that if in Joe’s mind we are committed, we could very well be committed if something happens unless he is removed.

Also, while the “official” policy is no commitment, whose to say there is not a secret commitment that Joe mistakenly leaked?

I confess have no idea what will happen.
