“Kennedy was repulsed by the murder of Diem”

I always laugh when that issue comes up. Kennedy’s man in Saigon instigated Diem’s removal and — what — Kennedy is ‘shocked’ that they killed him? The Diem family was ruthless. What did he expect? Kennedy was a frigging lightweight. You don’t green-light the removal of a dictator and then act all shocked at the methods used by the coup plotters.

Exactly. Kennedy ordered his removal and then was “shocked” that they killed him.

I understood it was Mcnamara’s idea, Kennedy went along
not expecting Diem to be assassinated and it came as a shock.

But hey, I wasn’t there.
