On Season 12 of “The Great British Bake Off” there’s a good bit of pot stirring — and it’s more than just batter.
The smash hit family show features a variety of contestant whisking towards the finish line — but the last thing viewers of the UK Channel 4 and Netflix series expect is drama, aside from the occasional undercooked cake or crumpet.
However, judge Prue Leith has caused a stir online after saying the decadent desserts are “worth every calorie.”
Social media watchdogs are now accusing the 84-year-old South African chef-restaurateur of repeatedly making “toxic” comments that are “triggering” to those with eating disorders.
“Prue Leith Stop Talking About Fat And Calories Challenge,” tweeted one viewer in jest. “I want to violently smack Prue Leith whenever she says ‘worth every calorie’ on bake off,” tweeted another.
“Prue Leith needs to learn that hot girls don’t count calories,” quipped one unimpressed viewer, while another chimed in: “Trying to resist the temptation to scream at my TV screen every time Prue Leith says a bake is “worth every calorie.’ Ughhhh.”
Although Leith was previously accused of purring X-rated pastry innuendo, the new wave of culinary criticism takes on a much darker tone.
“Mentions of calories can be triggering to people with or vulnerable to an eating disorder,” Tom Quinn, director of external affairs for eating disorder charity Beat, told UK outlet Unilad. “We know from the people we support that equating food with “good” or “bad” moral connotations can lead to feelings of guilt and shame, and can even encourage eating disorder behaviors. So, talk of food being ‘worth the calories’ is very unhelpful.”

I like this show. The people that can’t handle it shouldn’t watch.
Anorexics don’t watch cooking shows. Bulimics binge watch then throw their TVs out the window.
Someone needs to invent a channel changer or an off button.
Even though I watch this one and several variants like the Great Canadian Baking Show and the Kiwi Bake Off, the GBBS is the worst of the lot. It used to be about the UK's best amateur bakers but over the years it ended up following a formulaic diversity checklist with actual talent taking a back seat to what profile you fit in. Thanks to that this year we ended up with a Vegan baker who whined about having to use non-vegan products in the technical challenge (apparently all of the other bakers were supposed to accommodate her) and one who learned to bake a year ago by watching Youtube videos. It's turned into a parody of itself.
My advice to these whining cupcakes is "suck it up, buttercup".
I would watch it for its brutal honesty.
Oh gee whiz. Eating sweets is not meant to be a purely healthful past time. Let’s not pick apart unsafe pastimes, shall we? If people are free to play hockey, climb mountains, fly planes, and have anal sex, surely they can munch a profiterole??
Yeah, I noticed that too. There were several winners that won for that sake instead of talent.
OMG, that toxically delicious chocolate cake in my fridge is so triggering me. 😭🤪😋
Not if they’re a 36 stone porker bitch from Doncaster. They do exist.
If one has an eating disorder ANY food show would be “triggering”
What maroons
Cutting a distribution deal with Netflix might have something to do with it also.
I have a FB friend I joke with that also likes to bake. Having lived overseas, I took it for granted everyone in the U.S. knew what she was talking about- “You start with a sponge....” Think Sandra on vodka- grab that emergency box of yellow cake mix in the pantry because your mother-in-law just called. I loved the show, but figured the judge was bulimic. I only watched one season that was free online somewhere.

Those with eating disorders who are already watching a cooking show, so, y'know, **** off.
Social media watchdogs are triggering to those with three digit IQs.
