Actually in this case that might be what saved their lives what with LEO's being so trigger happy with all the cops getting shot these days.

At that point he, and his GF potentially, would have been riddled with bullets.

That may not be the answer you’re looking for and I’m certainly not condoning what the Marshal’s did, as someone that used to do that for a living when I was a detective, but he wouldn’t be around to talk to the NY Post. And, there’s a good chance his GF wouldn’t be either.
