I think she said that there are places in Alaska - out in the Aleutian Islands - where you can see Russia. Her point was that Alaskans do not view Russia as a far-off place the way most Americans do.
Also, there has been a lot of historical contact between Russia and Alaska. The Russian Orthodox Church as a long history in Alaska, and there was a lot of competition for fishing and trapping.

She was referring to Little Diomede Island, an island located in the Bering Strait and part of Alaska.
But about 2.5 miles away is Big Diomede Island, which is in Russian territory.
