5. Hanging on the Telephone (1978) Sometimes, a song takes a while to find its ideal singer. The original of Hanging on the Telephone, a 1976 single by LA powerpop band the Nerves, is pretty good, but Harry’s commanding performance owns the song, while Blondie’s arrangement is louder, brasher, tighter and tougher: the stuff of which classics are made.

Just like a slowly boiled frog, it started with simple “happy birthday” type songs, then songs with a little more risque lyrics and, before I knew it, I was showing up to parties dressed as a police officer and, after identifying the target, proceeded to dance in a way that I rather not discuss further.
My song was Blondie’s Atomic.
My last performance was when I went to a birthday party and the birthday girl was my ex-girlfriend. Awkward.
