It would be rather difficult to confirm the doctor’s claims. As you noted rolling_stone, members of Congress lie all the time. And they have a lot to hide.
But that doesn’t negate the need for confirmation. For a story to be trusted, there simply must be confirmation, as difficult as getting that confirmation might be.
I see unconfirmed stories as interesting, and perhaps worth some thought. But I cannot put much faith in them.
