Rand Paul explains Iron Dome vote; Bob Menendez rejects amendment
The Hill ^ | Oct 5 | The Hill

Posted on 10/05/2021 1:06:03 PM PDT by RandFan

Paul tried to alter the House-passed bill to rescind $6 billion in Afghanistan reconstruction funds, with $1 billion being used to cover the Iron Dome funding and the rest being sent back to the Treasury. He argued that the Afghanistan money could otherwise go to the Taliban.

"I support Israel. I voted for hundreds of millions of dollars to support Iron Dome. I am glad the United States has a strong bond with Israel. But the United States cannot give money it does not have, no matter how strong our relationship is," Paul said.

Menendez, however, blocked his attempt to alter the House bill and Paul, in turn, rejected Menendez's attempt to set up a quick vote.

Paul's amendment, Menendez said, was "problematic."

"This amendment ultimately proposes to rescind funds from the Departments of State and Defense, and this amendment would not reallocate funds that would allegedly go to the Taliban," Menendez said. "The reality is that U.S. dollars are not going to the Taliban, nor will they."

Paul blamed Democrats for holding up the Iron Dome funding, saying that they've offered to rescind less than $6 billion or to rescind a different pot of money.

"We've offered a basically open invitation to the other side that we think it ought to be paid for. So the objection from the other side is to paying for Iron Dome," he said

“Menendez the statutory rapist?”

The very same and guilty of much more than that.

Just because one supports the only free country in the ME doesn’t make one an Israeli Firster. On the other hand you sound very dismissive of support for Israel; so much so that one wonders if you’re consumed by antiSemitism. Or maybe you just fail to understand that it is in the US vital national interests that Israel be allowed to exist.

Do you agree with Rand, Rand?

I support helping Israel with the Iron Dome. A) I believe that money has strings attached requiring Israel to buy from U.S. vendors. B) Israel and the U.S. have been sharing missile defense tech with each other, including Israel giving us telemetry whenever the peaceful coexisters attack Israel with rockets. Like it or not, Israel is attacked a lot and the success/failure and tons of other data helps us be smarter with our own rocket defense. Think of it as us getting continuous real world test data because Muhammad taught to slay the infidels, especially followers of the book (a phrase he used sometimes for Jews and Christians as one lumped together group).

There are many supporters of Israel here (and in USA). The number of “Israel firsters” is, however, quite low.
You will do much better selling your point of view by not opening your presentation by “insulting” your readers.
Just saying.

Now then, I respectfully submit for your consideration that Senator Paul’s job does indeed INCLUDE protecting us USA taxpayers. And my addition of the INCLUDE is intended... because a US Senator’s job includes many additional things... like Defense, confirmation of federal judges, immigration and naturalization policy, oversight of Washington, DC even... and many more duties.

It is not always best for a US Senator to vote against an appropriation “to protect the taxpayers” or for any other reason. Some expenditures are necessary or helpful in various ways. The job of a US Senator is to protect us taxpayers, yes... in good balance with his/her other duties.

We probably agree that there is far too much spending going on in WashDC, and that the federal taxes are way too high. I will be in your corner on most tax and spend issues, and there are billions being wasted or spent in very harmful ways — zillions of dollars of giveaway welfare programs that are going to millions of voters....buying votes in reality... these $ only disincentivize the economy, resulting in high unemployment despite the fact that every business and factory in town is begging for people to return to work, less production, some actual supply shortages, and a weakened American economy.
I believe we probably agree on lots of things, let’s just avoid labeling people when those labels are maybe 90 percent wrong to begin with.
Respectfully submitted for your consideration.
Be well and stay (or make for some) Happy, too.

Thanks for your kind and respectful response!

I understand your position and many here but I’m against all foreign aid generally.

There are many who feel this way too and I believe it’s the correct conservative position ...But it’s very contentious I grant you.
.
We’ve had any long threads which I’m sure you’ve seen.

Israel will be fine with or without US support.

Every time a person dares criticize Israel, he or she is accused of being anti-Semitic. It’s just a way of trying to shut people up, similar to calling someone a racist for expressing conservative views.

No foreign country should have influence over US policies, and we should stop giving out foreign aid. Let Israel pay for its own defense. Ditto for the rest who make US taxpayers subsidized their military. NATO should have ended decades ago.

Ok while we differ at least part way on foreign aid ( I consider legitimate defense sharing with our Allies or for our strategic interests), I respect your pov in the general case. Thanks

What we get back from Israel in terms of intelligence sharing alone more than justifies the $3 or $4 Billion we pay them in the form of Foreign Aid. And its not even a close call. You simply do not understand what we get from Isreal for our money.

It is in our vital national interests that Israel remain the strongest, most capable and technologically advanced military in the middle east for the very reason that we want them to continue to be our eyes and ears in the middle east. Israel’s knowledge of terrorist networks; their ability to penetrate those networks; the kidnapping, interrogation and disposing of terrorists threats to the US, quietly, is a very big part of our national security strategy which Israel helps the US with in huge ways, so again, for the $3 to $4 Billion a year, thats a real bargain.

“Every time a person dares criticize Israel, he or she is accused of being anti-Semitic.”

News flash, that’s because it’s usually true. But if you say its not in your case, I’ll take your word for it.
