Pumps are tough to beat. One or two shots will end a conflict, unless you are dealing with a body-armored threat, in which case an AR rifle is in order. I’ve seen 40-50 year old Ithaca 37’s and Remington 870’s function flawlessly. They are a safe bet.
You need 2 to work a pump gun, one to work a semi-auto.
My daughter who lives alone only puts birdshot in her 20 ga. She worries a bit because neighbors have been home-invaded. I tell her if she won’t use buckshot she has to aim for the face and at least blind an attacker. And never say, “Stop or I’ll shoot!” Shoot first then say what you will.

You’re absolutely right. The first gun I bought myself was an Ithaca 37 in around 1975 at Montgomery Ward. Still have it, still works. Perfectly.
