I’m having a hard time figuring out how DNA is going to help in a case where the people lived together in a little tiny van.

You would think that the van which the police has had for some time would have plenty of places to gather DNA from both people.

They have no idea who else has been in the van. His parents helped "clean" it when he got home Sept 1st. They need a DNA sample that they know is only his, not mixed with multiple people.
