Ok. The circumstances are odd. In the big scheme of things, how does this impact me, my community, or the nation as a whole?

Are there other stories in the news that impact all of us? Yes. Our President just called our poor Border Patrol Agents racists and lied about them. The border is a wreck. Our foreign policy is a clown show. We murdered 7 kids and an aid worker. Our Covid policy is a shit show. The economy sucks as do our economic policies. He is raising taxes and cutting energy production. Inflation is raging. There are clear signs of fraud in the Arizona election. Hunter Biden was promising to free up billions for Libya in return for 2 million dollars (with 10% for the big guy). Biden owes 500k in back taxes. The vaccine mandate is about to gut our military and emergency services throughout the country. Much of the world thinks our President is of diminished capacity. China is being very aggressive towards Taiwan and Australia. Our government is in bed with the Taliban... yes, the Taliban. We possibly have another housing bubble. The stock market is quaking.

All of these are more important to me at the moment.

P.S. - I have seen lots of homicides in my life from the scene to the autopsy. They are all tragic and usually senseless, but in the big scheme of things this one does not rate in my top 50. If the victim was an “average looking female” it would warrant a few local news stories and that would be the end of it.

If we want to cover homicides why not talk about the innocent children being gunned down in Chicago every week or the rising murder rates throughout the country?

This is a distraction from very consequential news. It appears quite intentional and while the media loves a pretty face and a mystery they are milking it to keep from covering the stories (and more) that I listed above.
