Kohler, Wisconsin
Sept. 24-26, 2021

Team Selection
The US Team will be made up from the top six in the points rankings with six captain's picks. The European Team will comprise the first four players from the European Points List, followed by the leading five players from the World Points List and completed by three wild cards.

Ryder Cup Format
Each of the first two days includes one four-match session of fourball and one four-match session of foursomes. The final day is reserved for 12 singles matches.

Thank you for starting this thread.

I love golf, and I was privileged to attend the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine.

The excitement, patriotism, and enthusiasm of the spectators was epic.

I must be on Free Republic. A post about a golf tournament turns into bickering!

It’s not clear to me why some fellow FReepers click on posts that they have no interest in except to bash those who do.

The Ryder Cup is a wonderful show of patriotism which should be right up the Freerepublic alley!

Hard time watching Spieth and Thomas give it up on the front nine, but equally hard to see the Euros coming back in any of the other three.

The U.S. team typically is way behind until Sunday, when they fall further behind.

Surprisingly good golf. I remember Vijay’s major here in less-than-preferred conditions, but this is a tame beast so far today.

Tony Finau just snuffed Rory. Rory lost two Ryder Cup matches for the first time twice in one day.

I had an idea for baseball while watching golf match-play tournaments like the Ryder Cup.

How about match play in baseball? It can be played in the off-season as a sponsored tournament with players from any teams forming their own team for the tournament.

The format is as follows:

  1. Each team gets points for doing "baseball" actions.
  2. At the end of each inning, the team with the most points earned in the inning "wins" the inning. If they tie in points, the inning is tied.
  3. After nine innings, the team that won the most innings wins the match.
  4. If the teams are tied at the end of nine innings, they play another inning until one team wins.
  5. If one team is ahead by more points than innings left, the match is over and the leading team wins.

Points are earned as follows:

Like I said, inspired by golf's match play, I tried to think up a way to play baseball with an alternate set of scoring rules.

I wonder if it would make for an exciting way to play the game? It certainly would speed it up by shortening extra innings and having games end early if one team dominates the other (if a team wins the first five innings, the game ends because the other team cannot make up the difference with four innings left).

A tournament format could be an open round where groups of four teams each play the others (three games each), and the top two from each group advance to the single-elimination bracket rounds.

Or, it could be a charity event where two teams play a three-game series. The team with the most innings won after three games wins the event.

What a great win for The United States and the chants of USA and singing of our patriotic songs and the showing of our flag was huge. Golf may be the last bastion of American Sport.
