Canary Islands Volcano is erupting

According to USGS the Canary Island mega-tsunami is largely fiction. There is no evidence for it ever occurring in the past, so no reason to predict it in the future.
If you live in Florida let me give you a hint. When the big Canary Tsunami come the only place that will be above water is Ocala, maybe. Otherwise North Georgia or Tennessee.

Today's fissure developments at scattered locations- all in the same opening day- indicate a much larger eruption preparing to blow.
That would not be good for any Atlantic coastline.

Yep.
Let not hyperventilate about this yet.
1. The eruption is occurring south of the fracture zone of concern. Should activity move northward, then get more concerned.
2. The spectacular lava fountains are indicative of a basaltic lava, the kind observed In Hawaii and Iceland. This lava is not prone to violent eruptions.
3. #2 above could change to a thicker, more explosive lava and eruption. The eruptions of the volcano are historically been associated with this kind of lava. This is when worrying should increase.
4. Though hyped as a potential 150-300 foot high tsunami hitting the US if the western flank of the island fails, more recent studies indicate a more likely range of 25-75 feet. This lesser wave is nothing to scoff at and could create massive damage along the east coast by itself.
I would feel a lot better if Snopes would confirm this. LOL
