It’s ghastly all right.

The sculptor, Pericle Fazzini, designed it to symbolise Jesus rising above the twisty mess of human sin to emerge resurrected. It is supposed to actually represent Jesus rising above a nuclear holocaust, desperation and sin.

Modern art, formless and without beauty, is meant not to delight but to confront the viewer. In fact, it is a rejection of history and conservative values such as realistic depiction of subjects which would make it wholy inappropriate for a religious theme as central to Christianity as the Resurrection.

Fazzini (born 1913) has an oddly brief bio on wikipedia and his other works are in NY’s Museum of Modern Art and in Dallas. Odd choice of artist...and totally unacceptable sculpture....unless you were deliberately trying to anger or confuse people.
