News Clippings:
Unvaccinated Americans should avoid Labor Day travel, the C.D.C. director says.
NY Times reports: Thailand allowed shopping malls in Bangkok to reopen on Wednesday and restaurants to operate at half capacity, Reuters reported. The moves come after nearly three months of tough restrictions aimed at containing the country’s worst coronavirus outbreak. The number of infections started falling in the middle of August.
On Monday (30 Aug), the European Union removed the United States from its “safe list” of countries whose residents can travel to its 27 member states without requirements such as quarantine and testing.
Under Italy’s newly announced policy, unvaccinated American travelers will now have to “self-isolate” for five days upon arrival in the country.
Google said on Tuesday (31 Aug) that it would delay reopening its offices until Jan. 10. The new date is a postponement from October, which was a postponement from September, which was a postponement from July, which was a postponement from January.
According to a survey released Wednesday, most companies now have plans to require that employees get vaccinated by the end of the year. Conducted by Willis Towers Watson, the survey polled nearly 1,000 companies that together employ almost 10 million people:
52 percent plan to have vaccine mandates by the end of the year (including 21 percent that already do).
78 percent plan to track employees’ vaccination status (55 percent already do).
17 percent are considering health insurance premium rewards or surcharges to encourage vaccination (2 percent already do).
CNN reports: Child Covid-19 hospitalizations reach a new high. More kids were hospitalized with Covid-19 this month than any other time this past year... Between August 20 and 26, an average of 330 children were admitted to hospitals every day... Dr. Mark Kline, physician-in-chief of Children's Hospital New Orleans said, "half of the children that we've admitted have been under the age of 2."
The American Academy of Pediatrics said Tuesday (31 Aug),during the week ending August 26, more than 200,000 new childhood Covid-19 cases were reported, the AAP said. That's a "five-fold increase the past month, rising from about 38,000 cases the week ending July 22nd to nearly 204,000 the past week."... Almost half -- 46.4% -- of children hospitalized with Covid-19 between March 2020 and June 2021 had no known underlying condition. (Pediatric Deaths from COVID so far (496) are similar to a bad flu season)
Boston Herald reports: “There’s every reason to believe that (the delta variant) is more contagious to children and from children than the older variants, and that means that at a societal level, we’re seeing higher numbers of cases in all age groups, including in children,” said Marc Lipsitch, infectious disease epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Children are still much less likely to get severe coronavirus compared to adults even with the delta variant circulating in the community, said Lipsitch. But as schools reopen and the weather gets colder, cases are expected to increase.
Washington Examiner reports: Booster shots could be designed to target delta variant... The idea of a delta variant vaccine booster would be particularly viable because of the mRNA technology used to create the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines. Such vaccines "can be adapted quickly... “It sounds good that if you matched [the booster with the variant], it would be better, but that actually has not been proven,” (Dr. Larry) Corey said. “Even against the more resistant variants, it may be that just having more antibodies is all that's required.”... A recent study from Israel (https://www.gov.il/BlobFolder/reports/vaccine-efficacy-safety-follow-up-committee/he/files_publications_corona_booster-27082021.pdf ) followed those 60 and older who received a Pfizer booster shot based on the original strain of the virus from July to August. It found an 11-fold decrease in the risk against COVID-19 infection and a 10-fold decrease in the risk of developing severe illness among those who received a booster.
Has Delta variant peaked in the USA? In several Countries (India, the UK, Indonesia, Thailand, France, Spain and several other countries) it has followed a two month rise pattern. The Early States hit by Delta (Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri) have already peaked.
Business Insider reports: Procter & Gamble is running its toilet paper mills 24/7 as the spread of the Delta variant prompts Americans to stockpile again. Costco is starting to limit purchases again.
WLKY (Kentucky) reports: Kentucky reported an all-time high positivity rate (13.66%) Tuesday (31 Aug) as the state continues to deal with the impacts of the highly contagious delta variant... "The delta variant continues to spread like wildfire," Gov. Beshear said.
CNN reports: China's economy is being rattled by the Delta variant and supply chain woes. An official survey of manufacturing activity fell to 50.1 in August from 50.4 in July. That was just above the 50-point mark indicating expansion rather than contraction, but still the slowest rate of growth since the start of the pandemic. Service industries, which now account for a larger slice of the world's second biggest economy, fared even worse. The non-manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index plunged to 47.5 from 53.3 in July, the first contraction since February 2020... Fallout from the Delta variant and China's zero-COVID approach has wrought havoc in recent weeks. The country's worst coronavirus outbreak in a year spurred authorities to take dramatic measures to stop new infections, including locking down cities, cancelling flights and suspending trade... A terminal at the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port south of Shanghai was shut for weeks after a dock worker tested positive for COVID-19, adding to a backlog caused by an earlier shutdown in southern China, home to some of the world's busiest container ports.
Newsweek reports: Scientists Question Joe Biden's Push for COVID Vaccine Booster Shots. On Monday (30 Aug), the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said during a panel that they may recommend a different approach to boosters than the one proposed by Biden depending on further evidence. Dr. Felipe Lobelo of Emory University, an epidemiologist and associate professor, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution: "We don't really have strong data on when the waning starts; on whether the increased rates of infection and so-called breakthrough infections...are occurring because of this waning effect—or is it because Delta is more transmissible? Or is it because people are changing behaviors?"... Two senior officials with the FDA announced they will be stepping down on Tuesday, citing frustrations with the decision-making surrounding the booster shot, according to The New York Times and other media outlets. Dr. Marion Gruber, director of the FDA's Office of Vaccines Research and Review, will retire in October after 32 years, with her deputy, Dr. Philip Krause, planning to leave the FDA in November. Paul Offit, a University of Pennsylvania infectious disease expert who sits on FDA's vaccine advisory committee, told Politico that the move to go ahead with a potential third shot was "the administration's booster plan; it wasn't the FDA's booster plan."
Newsweek reports: Stainless Steel Fragments Found in Moderna Vaccine Shots (the recent suspension of 1.6 million doses in Japan), found to be from needles used in administration (metal shavings and bits of rubber stopper material), not factory defects)
Washington Post reports: Bill Belichick says Cam Newton’s vaccination status played no role in his release from the New England Patriots on Tuesday (31 Aug). Mac Jones is their new quarterback.
Kiss front man Paul Stanley and bassist Gene Simmons tested positive for COVID-19, forcing the band to postpone a string of shows.
The recession triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed Social Security one year closer to insolvency, the government reported Tuesday (31 Aug). Projections show Social Security will be unable to pay full benefits in 2034, which is one year sooner than previous projections.
The number of Americans who have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine has risen by 17 percent since Pfizer's was granted full approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week, according to an analysis by ABC News. (Back to school prep or mandates may account for some of this change)
1,209 Daily Deaths - Flat (change from seven weeks of growth).
129 of those deaths reported today sadly were right here in Georgia.<
I think Georgia is nearing its peak in cases and hospitalizations and will likely exceed the January surge. Hopefully, with more and more vaccinations and with over 10K new cases per day delivering immunity this surge will be the last big one. Hopefully.
FDA approval and the Delta surge seems to have push a lot of people to get vaxed. Last poll I saw showed the number of people who “will not” get the shot has fallen to 14% with another 6% saying “unlikely”. That doesn’t leave many more who intend to get vaccinated. 5%-10% max.
It does look like we might be at the peak of this wave.
Thank you again for your detailed work. hopefully we are close to seeing the end of this surge
I hope this is peak. We are seeing over 80 patients a day, up to 100 in our clinic every day. Used to think 40 was a busy day.
Can’t take much more of this…
“I hope this is peak.”
It looks strongly like it is - on average, at the National level.
But locally, some areas started and peaked earlier, while others started later, and have not yet peaked.
It is generally a 7-8 week rise in cases, then a 2-4 week drop to half that level.
Of course, the peak in hospitalizations will likely lag the peak in new cases, and deaths will lag a bit more.
The Vaccines DON’T WORK. You can still get it, still spread it and still die from it so what good is it and now Fauci, the idiot that for some reason people think is a GOD is now saying maybe booster shots every 5 months.
The guy is insane as is anyone that follows or listens to him or ANYTHING the govenrment says on this.
Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine is just 39% effective in Israel where the delta variant is the dominant strain, but still provides strong protection against severe illness and hospitalization, according to a new report from the country’s Health Ministry.
Most COVID-19 Patients at Israel Hospital Fully Vaccinated, Doctor Calls Mandates ‘Diabolic’
On Aug. 5, Dr. Kobi Haviv, medical director of Herzog Hospital in Jerusalem, said in a Channel 13 TV News interview, “95% of the severe patients are vaccinated.” Furthermore, “85-90% of the hospitalizations are in fully vaccinated people” and the hospital is “opening more and more COVID wards.”
If you are vaxxed, your blood cannot be used to help those suffering from covid... according to the Red Cross.
Thanks for the data. I downloaded the detail for my state (IL) because the morbidly obese governor who gives health advice to the rest of us has mandated masks indoors (I have so far resisted complying because I’m vaccinated and know that face diapers do no good).
There are nice charts showing the rate of vaccination and the cases/deaths/etc - but what I’m not seeing in the detail is the answer to the only question that I think matters:
“What percentage of those new cases (and hospitalizations and deaths) were not vaccinated?
Am I missing it?
That’s because convalescent plasma requires the donor to have recovered from the disease in question.
It has peaked here and we are decreasing in numbers pretty decently in the Southeast region.
Well, duh. Vaccinated is not convalescent. Why is this getting you all a twitter?
Yet another perfect instance of someone who demonstrates his or her absolutely brilliant command of a complex issue without understanding basic biology. There are days that I just shake my head. But as we say about orthopedists — often wrong, never in doubt.
@ post 5. Wait until cold flu season begins of 2021. Then the real shutdowns and mandates may take place. We will all be in hazmats suits — if we care about the children.

A 10% increase in saving lives in very severe cases, as I understand it.
Good news, BUT...
EARLY treatment is best.
If previously infected or vaxxed, seek treatment for “cold” symptoms earlier than you normally would.
And if neither vaxxed nor prev infected, seek testing/treatment MUCH earlier than you normally would for “cold” symptoms.
>> Yet another perfect instance of... [ignorance]
Mom MD elaborates on MPU’s quote: “.. according to the Red Cross.”
Not clear who you’re criticizing, gas.
I think it’s because if you’ve recovers and then gotten vaxxed you’ve killed off the antibodies…
The reasons for the aberration in Israel’s figures have been listed several times.
it’s a lie to continue to call this “president trump’s operation warp speed” when you know trump is no longer president and “operation warp speed” no longer exists...
Hospitalizations have peaked but vents up. Fairly typical progression through a wave. Looks like this will continue.
Interesting debate in FDA over the booster announcement
