I grew up on and lived on a farm with greenhouses most of my life.
My own experience is that with proper weed and insect control, you get good results. Those two are a learning experience.

My luck hasn't always been that great. There are a lot of varieties in my collection that turned out to not be reliable in my climate. And I know gardeners in areas where it's even harder to get a crop. In fact one of my online acquaintances, Joseph Lofthouse, recently published a book on ways to breed plants so as to adapt them to difficult areas. (His book, "Landrace Gardening", is on my long list of recommended books.)
Sometimes you find a good match right away, and sometimes it takes a few tries.
