A new “doomsday” Covid variant has been discovered, with health experts fearing it moves nearly “twice as fast” as the deadly Delta strain.

Could not have said it better.
What about “The Steel Curtain” variant, or the “Purple People Eaters” variant.
Branch Covidians: The End is Near. It’s imperative that you accept Fauci as your lord and savior and follow his commandments before it is too late.
I guess the old cliché won't work anymore. Viruses are always mutating.
The mRNA vaxes target only the spike protein of the virus. And maybe only a portion of that spike. All the vaccines do. To do more requires more time, and the goal of Warp Speed was to get something out within a year.
The J&J vaccine is a vector vaccine. It’s not mRNA but like the mRNA vax it teaches your own cells to make the spike so that your immune system can learn it.
The Novavax vaccine is a subunit protein vax. It has its own spike for teaching your immune system. It isn’t telling your own cells to make the spike.
Anyway the vaccines all work, but only against variants having the original spike. Delta has a mutation that changes the spike enough to evade the vaccines. So delta is getting passed around while the original virus stalls out.
If you catch covid your immune system learns the whole virus and not just the spike. Wild-type antibodies. So it should be able to defeat the virus no matter what the spike looks like.
A whole virus vaccine would be similar to that, creating Wild-type antibodies. But ADE was a problem in previous attempts to create whole virus vaccines for SARS-1 and MERS. And ADE can kill you. It may be awhile before there’s a whole virus vaccine available.
I’ll worry when we get to the Naked Streisand variant.
Annette got pfizer Sunday at Kroger.....I thought at first cvs
She’s a ninny by nature...she got Covid first of all of us and was very sick
Aside from a bad cluster headache last night...nothing else
I didn’t protest her decision much she fears her employers may bitch since they are libs and all they hear is how natural immunity is not great....which is the tv narrative
Wonder why media tech science Borg pimp that....downplaying natural immunity
My polio friend with it is over it.
I see him tomorrow
I know, but thanks for a nice summary. I agree entirely. Almost everyone who went after rapid production of a vaccine used nucleic acid-based approaches (e.g. adenovirus vectors encoding a transgene for the spike protein, the mRNA approaches encoding the spike protein, etc.). It was about what was easiest, not what would be projected to be most effective. But as you point out, ADE was/is a significant problem
Actually, having a virion structure that induces antibodies that promote ADE is probably a selected for property of these viruses. It would be highly advantageous for the virus.
Considering all of this, it was absolute stupidity mixed with hubris to promote gain of function research as Fauci did.
“Considering all of this, it was absolute stupidity mixed with hubris to promote gain of function research as Fauci did.”
If the Obama regime banned gain of function research as has been reported it’s one of the few things that they did right.
But Fauci apparently circumvented that ban by knowingly funding it in Wuhan. I’d sure like to see this pinned down so that we can know for sure.
It looks to me like there has been collaboration on research between Chapel Hill and China over the years. Transferring American GoF over to Wuhan probably wouldn’t have been difficult at all. It would have become even more dangerous because of Wuhan’s known lax safety record.
“I know, but thanks for a nice summary. “
I suppose I do that because the repetition helps me keep it straight and fix it in my memory. I appreciate the feedback- my education such as it is comes from reading PubMed papers and paying attention to what genomics companies have been trying to do for years. I can tell when I run across those of you who actually know what you’re talking about. A rare commodity around here.
I imagine that natural immunity is being ignored because there is no easy way to validate it. The antibody tests are slow and costly so they aren’t going to do them unless you pay for it yourself.
There’s nothing quick and cheap like the PCR that they use for deciding whether you have Covid; and that thing apparently is prone to false positives, so cheap isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.
If nothing else you and Annette know personally that you have wild-type immunity and that’s as good as it gets. New variants should pose little to no risk for you. If I’m lucky I could have wild-type immunity too. When I got my 1st moderna shot I had recurring chills for days which likely means that my immune system already knew what a spike protein was, and that would only be from having had covid.
I don’t think govt tech science medical media axis wishes naturally obtained immunity to usurp the power of vax mandates
At first they discredited it
Now it’s kind of overpowering the narrative given so many breakthroughs
Vaccines are an attempt to acquire natural immunity without actually getting the disease. That’s been true since Colonials inoculated themselves with cowpox before the Revolution. It ought to be obvious to anyone remotely paying attention that natural immunity is the gold standard that vaccines attempt to duplicate.
I don’t watch TV so I miss a lot of the misinformation and outright stupidity that passes for news. If people were “discrediting” natural immunity then they are idiots.
The narrative is vested in vax
Power
Fear folks will stop taking vax
Infection parties
A myriad of reasons
I knew anthropology and social science etc were political
But you once could trust most science and the CDC and AMA and so on
Now it’s all politics and they withhold info and just plain lie and demonize detractors
Total Collusion
There’s no doubt that politicians are exploiting covid for their own ends.
But on the medical end, people should keep in mind that in early 2020 the only thing known about Covid-19 was that it is a variety of SARS.
The only other known SARS outbreak, back in 2003, was lethal, killing 9% of the infected. Its cousin virus MERS was even more lethal, killing 32% of the infected.
If Covid had been anything close to those two this would have been a disaster more than double the 1918 flu. There’s a valid reason it scared the virus hunters. With the benefit of hindsight we know it isn’t that lethal.
