The idolization started well before. It was based on the image of youth, ease of manner (he was a charming SOB), and his wife's sophistication when compared with a stolid midwestern Eisenhower's, and smart but always brooding Nixon. That the musical Camelot opened during the 1960 campaign and ran on Broadway through his administration gave the fawning press a convenient title and pretty myth.

I read that Jackie really hyped the Camelot angle after the assassination, I guess for sympathy and social value.
I wonder how many of these women she heard about.
