Byrd’s got some real problems. Previous statements to fellow officers about “bagging” a whitey. He’s considered a loose-cannon.

He is just a liar. He did not need to do that. He saved no lives. If they wanted to protect him they should have released the name and put him in witness relocation. Someone may go after him now. Maybe they want someone to.
