My understanding is the vaccines are extremely specific, focused on a single protein in the virus.

Corona viruses mutate quickly. So a new strain pops up that doesn’t contain that particular protein. So that strain thrives.

People who have had COVID 19 have a more general immunity that resists many of the new variants that arise.

This is exactly why I am hesitant to get the vaccine. I had Covid and have had 3 different doctors tell me my natural immunity to it is now stronger than anything the vaccine can provide. My daughter’s pediatrician also told me Wednesday she would NOT give my 12 yo daughter the vaccine because it’s too experimental and my daughter has also had covid so she has the natural immunity too.
