Maybe it’s just developmental stages they are assessing. Seeing a mother’s smile is important, at least I would think so. But i don’t know if there’s a cognitive benefit.
But I just thought of this reading your post - what of all the deaf people that need to read lips? They have to feel even more isolated.

Babies just read expressions, etc. Deafness is usually detected early on.
