His lawyer insisted to the New York Times that his client had a gambling addiction but was “in no way motivated” by greed.
He added “He’s a good person, he loved his job, he loved his students. He’ll move past this.”

IMHO none of that matters.

He knowingly broke laws.

Plus he was in a position of trust and authority which he not only abused but used to scam his own students and cheat his employer for personal gain.

His sentence is much too light for the crimes he committed.
