“I hate to pass this on, but the only thing that works past 60 is calorie control. You probably need to get below 2000 calories a day and closer to 1500 to lose weight.”
I’m 65 and losing body fat at a rate of nearly 2lbs per week, while adding muscle mass.
I lift 3 days per week, cardio (30mins) 5 days per week and eat at least 2300 calories per day.
I don't do fad anything. I try to make rational decisions based on studies about nutrition, weight loss, aging, and exercise. I know that independent scientific studies don't tell us everything, but taken as a whole there are general conclusions to be drawn that are useful for most men.
Diet is important - the more plant foods, the better - I'm really trying to include more fruit and veg onto my plate. Cardio is important for heart health - but that doesn't have to mean marathons. Even walking is a good activity to start with. Weight training is vital for men our age, for a lot of reasons. Again, we don't have to train like an Olympian, but we need to do something to protect bone density and slow down the natural loss of muscle as we age. Lifting increases testosterone levels, even in older men. It makes your sticker peck out.
I'm doing more for my health now than I have since I was 40.
“Weight training is vital for men our age”
Far too many think that is BS.
They say it “doesn’t work” because they are not willing to DO the work.
Fad diets are the craze now. That’s easier psychologically and emotionally.
While their muscles waste away and their metabolism slows to the point they gain weight on 1500 calories per day.
While it’s been known for centuries, if not millennia, that resistance training is the key to health and longevity.
Resistance training can be painful. It’s hard.
So the pussies won’t do it.
I’m 74 and have been eating zero carb carnivore the last three years. Meat, fish, and eggs, and some dairy. I’m 6’1”, went from 235 to 183. And my testosterone is UP. Well, something is up so I had it checked, and it was midrange for a guy half my age.
I do pushups against my computer desk and squats. Thinking about getting the Total Gym equipment. Anyone using it?
Not bad for 74. You go, guy!
I did the paleo diet. It worked 100% It wasn’t particularly difficult to follow. I lost 30 pounds in about 6 months. With much reflection I have sacrificed the diet for my love of pasta and bread and put 10lbs of the 30 back on. Been holding steady at 200 to 205. I will just blame it on the lock downs. But for me, I am just not willing to give up bread. Fresh hot glutinous crusty bread is one of the finest things in life. Even Jesus says so......
BUT.... The no carb diet does work. But as with all things, sacrifice and moderation. Now where did I put my beer?
I’m pretty sure it has shrunk my prostate too. I can form a stream again when I pee.
HDL is 62, triglycerides 44.
Look at me, I just returned from Ralph’s with two rib steaks, and a huge cinnamon coffee cake. Hey, I do drink coffee.
That 500 calorie day sounds pretty tough. ;-)
Well, I am glad to see that the rest of us fail compared to your massive will power and sheer will to succeed. I’ll make sure the guy I work next to in the wheel chair gets the memo.
The rest of us will cut our calories since we are not strac enough to compete with you.
Sounds good but I would treat those lil things like potato chips!
Calorie control is key.
Thing is, it's only sensible to find balance. Balance between enjoyable and healthy, because the two aren't always compatible. That's in diet and in exercise.
Carbs are not good for you. I hate that because I love my pasta.
My schedule is skip breakfast, eat lunch and a late, but light, dinner. So, no eats from 8:00 PM until noon the next day.
You may want to have a late breakfast and a late lunch, and skip dinner. So, no eats from 5 PM until 9 AM the next day.
You could start with the 14 hour fast, fasting from 6 PM until 8 AM the next morning. That could prove to be a lot easier. It’s not as rapid a weight loss, but you will lose the big belly. Remember not to overeat. Just eat until you are satisfied, not full.
The 500 calorie day is not required, but it does accelerate weight loss noticeably. Just brush your teeth and drink water if you get hungry. Or forget about the 500 calorie day. You should still see a weight decline.
The big advantage to intermittent fasting is you can eat whatever you like. Pizza. Ice Cream. Fried Clams. Cheeseburgers. Pancakes and Bacon. Buttered Toast. Omelets.
As long as you maintain the schedule, and don’t overeat, you’ll enjoy the weight loss.
After about 6 months, your body will have attained its correct weight for your stature and age. You can relax your rules a bit at this point. If your weight begins to climb again, return to a more aggressive fasting schedule.
I’m 62 and I swim 3 miles and cycle outside over 150 miles a week.
I also lift light 2 times a week.
I’m almost back to my weight in my 20’s.
But it’s allot of work.
Carbs are required for energy.
I can eat whatever carbs I want and lose weight with the intermittent fasting schedule.
I don't have belly fat. But even if I did, I wouldn't give up Friday night Italian-palooza-fest for anything.
The rest of the week is just meats, fats (cheese, butter) and veggies, with a few pieces of fruit, and wild rice here and there.
And a glass of wine or bourbon...
Resistance bands. They are great for people over 60.
There is actually a disease that is caused by not getting enough carbs. They normally only see it in thru-hikers like on the Appalachian Trail. It mimics Lupus.
I went to the one meal a day thing about 1 1/2 years ago. Eat whatever I want, including dessert. Not much of a sugar person so cutting out sugar was easy. I’ve lost 45 lbs. Slowly. My stomach has shrunk enough that if I go out and order a hamburger and fries I can’t eat over 6 or 7 fries and half the hamburger. It really is a kind of forced calorie count thing.

Yes! I can’t eat large anymore, either.
But I can eat whatever I want. Including sweets and carbs.
