HIV mutates so much....if one cultures one particular strain in a viral culture medium...there will be a different strain rapidly. It mutates so fast, the researcher cannot study a specific strain. Presumably the reason for rapid speciation is that the virus genome doesn’t code for correction enzymes which correct most mutations. Covid 19 ain’t that fast.
