The search continues for Philip Kreycik, a man who went missing while he was running in the Pleasanton Hills Saturday morning.
His car, with his wallet and phone inside, was found in the parking lot.
Kreycik came out for what was supposed to be a 6-8 mile-run, somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour.
Police found his planned route on an app on his phone – that phone was in his parked car in the parking lot.
So far, they’ve searched that route multiple times and haven’t found him or anything that might lead them to him.
Pleasanton police are leading this search that has been going on since about 2 p.m. Saturday, but they’re still hopeful of a positive outcome.
Kreycik lives in Berkeley and drove out to Pleasanton for a run.
His wife reached out to police after she couldn’t find her husband several hours after he should have come home.
Lieutenant Chris Neiderhaus says they’re doing everything to find him.
He says while they have searched his route, the terrain makes it difficult to easily spot anything or anyone.
“This area behind me is a very steep, rugged, canyon type of environment – and there’s a lot of little trails that go left and right.”
This is the trail where dogs lost track of Kreycik’s scent.
“We are concerned due to the heat. We don’t think he has a large water source.”
Neiderhaus says right now they don’t suspect foul play or that Kreycik wanted to disappear.
Their equipment can’t see through all the vegetation so people have to physically go into it and search.
“We were out running this morning and then we saw all the police patrol cars.”
Arun Sharma is one of the volunteers helping with the search.
He doesn’t know Kreycik but wanted to help anyway.
“We look out for each other.”
He says it’s a reminder to take every run seriously – because you never know what may happen.
“Always be prepared. Don’t take it easily. Anything can happen… a 15-minute run or an hour run.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the Pleasanton Police Department at 925-931-5100.
I never hiked at this one.
It's not normal for dogs to lose a scent when tracking.
I don’t see a park name. Do you?
My daughter and boyfriend are working on hiking every park in the EBRPD. They are around 60% now. I introduced them to Sunol a month ago. My daughter forgot she hiked it with me when she was around four years old!
There are big mountain lions there. I saw them stalking horses one day. This guy wu z dragged into de cave for dinner.
Eventually I'd like to hike every park in EBRPD. I only have a few left in the Santa Cruz mountain.
A trail run in those hills isn’t very smart.
It is when you are picked up by aliens.
All those hills from Briones South and Niles east and South have many mountain lions. With his tail he is longer than a horse. If n you can’t pack heat, Pack a big dog.
The dogs didn’t lose his scent. They picked up on the mountain lion scent and quit right then n there.
I don’t by that. I don’t remember any cases around there of a mountain lion attacking a person. One time I read a mountain lion stalking a hiker in Sunol maybe. There are lots of deer up there.
If they do find the guy, maybe Les Stroud can do one of his reenactments of it. Lots of those stories are of berry pickers, runners, day hikers that went out planning on a few hours so they were really unprepared if they got injured or lost for days.
Maybe he got lost because he didn't have his phone with the route map on it.
I hope they find him alive.
We had a horse ranch in Alamo ... One late afternoon a mountain lion came down the trail, spooked the Morgan my sister was riding, and threw her off... I saw a mountain lion going after horses in the hill behind McDonald’s in Fremont at noontime in broad daylight...mountain lion attack in southern California...
Rambulatoryambulatory.com....mar. 22, 2010 attacked in Northern California
I carefully gathered her up and slowly turned her around and made her walk in the direction of home which was about 10 miles. She did not stop shaking until she could see the house.
I started asking the old timers in the area what was making her do that. A cat!!! They said. The natural enemy of the zebra is the lion.
The sagebrush was probably a marking post for a territory.
There was a woman trail runner in SoCal caught and eaten by a lion a few years ago. A couple years ago a mountain biker in Washington was caught and eaten. It is rare, but does happen. Moving fast does trigger an attack instinct.
