I believe that there has to be more to this; perhaps Barr wanted to avoid impeachment; but underlying that threat was something that Barr felt would darken his reputation that he had earned as a square shooter.
AG Barr stopped the totally corrupt Mueller investigation as well as the bogus obstruction of justice follow-up. Barr cleaned out some questionable (to say the least) US Attorneys, all poised to subvert their office in order to help defeat Trump at the proper time.
What Barr did NOT do is penetrate the DS move to consolidate power unto itself, viz Wray (probably recommended to Trump by Barr), Haspel, a few dozen US Attorneys, perhaps at least one Supreme Court nominee, questionable FISC judges... etc.
Speaking of Haspel, what’s become of her lately. She kind of fell off the edge of the earth (which, as we all know, is flat).
