Under Kubuntu I tried the below, and it connected via one of the adapters that had not worked before, though written in memory since I forgot I had removed the USB drive I was booting from. Anyway, it likely would also work for Mint if I chose to use it. For now. i may wait until the SSD comes in to install it on.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install build-essential git dkms
git clone https://github.com/brektrou/rtl8821CU.git
cd rtl8821CU
chmod +x dkms-install.sh
sudo ./dkms-install.sh
sudo modprobe 8821cu
