It looks like I owe many of you an apology.
I often want to see the good in people, especially those with great talent. I search for patriots to unite with, because there are so few leading the charge.
Many of you know that I have often shared Brian Cates' work. Months ago, I asked many of you to join his channel when he had far fewer subscribers.
My wife and I even donated money to support his work.
However, as the weeks have passed by, I've started to regret that decision more and more.
I've observed a mean streak in Brian's work. Pride. Arrogance. Chastising folks in his chat rooms. Making things unnecessarily personal.
Brian makes it a consistent point to share how he, a "real journalist," investigates matters by checking his sources and doing a thorough job.
I'll revisit this last point shortly.
Brian has pieced many things together that I think are true. But in other areas, I believe he has profound blind spots.
I've interviewed both Joshua Merritt and Lin Wood, and have the future honor of interviewing Sidney Powell.
I've researched each extensively. In fact, I'll wager I've researched their lawsuits, and the affidavits in support thereof, far more than Brian Cates.
And, I mean it's not even close.
I am also in possession of Joshua Merritt's military service discharge records, and conducted a three hour interview with him months ago.
At no time, has Joshua misrepresented his military experience. In fact, the first 30 minutes of my first interview, includes a painstaking history of his service in the military.
Instead of doing his homework, however, Brian has recirculated talking points from a mainstream media hit piece written by professional liars.
Now for the law.
Under Rule 701 of the Rules of Evidence, Joshua would easily be qualified as an expert in cyber-security. Expert designation can be acquired in a variety of ways. Experience, training, and education are all avenues.
Brian, a non-lawyer, conflates the evidentiary standard, suggesting incorrectly, that Joshua would have to have served in an official military intelligence capacity, to warrant an expert designation.
Brian is wrong. Dead wrong.
Joshua had expertise in hacking prior to his military service, and acquired cyber security experience during, and after, his military service.
Joshua was wounded in the service of our country and deserves far better.
A "real journalist" ALWAYS seeks comment, and solicits both sides of a story before publishing.
Brian failed to do either in the case of Joshua Merritt.
I will be unsubscribing from Brian Cates' channel, and I apologize if you subscribed as a result of my initial enthusiasm.
I invite Brian to do a real time interview with Joshua, and myself, so he can do the right thing.
And that's print a retraction and apology.
