I don’t remember Lompoc being a rival of ours at all.. so maybe we just went and watched??

I dunno. SLO was in the CIF Southern Section Northern League with us, when I was in High School. 73-77. I know they've since restructured and I have no idea.

Other than;our cross-town rivals the Cabrillo Conquistadors (get it, Braves vs. Conquistadores?), San Looey was the powerhouse 'big city' monsters from beyond the trees. They always had a decent football and basketball team.

We were tiny but we were mighty. Our football team consistently went deep into the CIF playoffs, but SLO always gave us the business, if not beat us.

After about ten years straight of taking it in the shorts from our cross country team (one of the best in the nation, and who had never lost a meet in like ten years), along came Bagster to maintain the streak.

Sadly, there were just two upper classmen left from the dynasty. So we frosh-sophs had to carry the weight. Once, against SLO, our brilliant coach decided to include Lookout Point (a very steep hill) in the course. The idea was to stymie the San Luis foreigners with surprise hill sex.

Little did that tiny man know, but we found out later that there are hills in San Luis Obispo. Duh. We got our ass handed to us and the streak was over. I passed our number one guy halfway up the hill. He had stopped and was walking up the hill like Private Pyle after a dozen jelly donuts. I passed him in disgust. I went on to finish 2nd on our team, cause I was a strong hill runner, with thighs like steel and the cardio of a god.

Aaaanyway. A few weeks later, we were at the Mount Sac (Mount San Antonio College) invitational. Hundred of runners from all over southern Cal. The largest cross country invitational in the state. I was the only freshman that made the trip, and had no team to run with. I had one several invitationals previously and was expected to win this one.

Running the course before the race, I came across some SLO runners just hanging out along the way. They looked at me and one of them said, "Thanks for running us on a hill".

Hahahaha. The bastards.

I finished 8th cause I jacked up my ankle during the race. Boo. AND because of that, I didn't run the rest of the year and didn't get me my varsity letter like my frikken bestie did, who I was better than. I still got issues about that. : )

Life is pain. And SLO sucks. : )

Wait. Was that a slide?

*Fiddle Dee Dee*

High school slide...

The year sister’s handsome boyfriend graduated they went to the CIF finals, so we musta been rivals lol.

I was in high school, ours was 3 yrs, so 1971-1974. Hahaha... I wonder if our paths crossed!!

Yeah as I recall we had some pretty good sports teams back then.

Hills... hahahahahha.. So they didn’t teach you about the Nine Sisters??? (better known as the Seven Sisters locally, since 2 are off limits)

I’m glad you kept up the cross country streak for a bit. 8th with a bad ankle isn’t too bad. It’s in the top 10!

If I miss anything about Cali, it’s San Luis Obispo or the SLO of my past, I guess. I have such great memories and I think it such a beautiful area. As a family we went all over and did a ton of things. As teens we did the same.

I loved the old Avila Beach, See Canyon, the hot springs, hiking Bishop’s Peak, Pismo Beach, Nacimiento Lake. San Antonio- too windy, Lopez Lake, too windy lol.
