So, it cost $77 million in start up funds to remove the ads at the top of a search page?

I am thinking...

Why can't Google remove their own ads - with a couple mouse clicks - and start charging an optional subscription fee, just like their new competitor?

Exactly. This venture is a non-starter. $60 year seems high for a single service, especially when there are no- cost alternatives. Consumers are getting subscription fatigue as well. For this business, the model is off, the market timing is bad, and the competition has established and free providers.
