I was just re-reading an old Stephen King book ‘From a Buick 8’. In it he references the ‘Cardiff Giant’ an old hoax from late 1800’s. Almost as remarkable as actual scientific finds are the lengths folks have gone to in faking them, and how long it took to determine they were hoaxes. The Piltdown Man lasted 40 years.
I’ve seen the Cardiff Giant. Actually grew up next to Cardiff.
Wasn’t so much the effort required to make the fake (albeit considerable), it was the willingness of many to believe it (like the lead hyperventilating article).
The “giants” shown are not impossibly large. As noted, big heads do happen.
