Who decided that old films need to be colorized now? You aren’t really restoring it, just making up colors and adding them.
It was done to make it more realistic, and I think it succeeds very well when this is done.
The brain takes in cues of all kinds, color, depth, sharpness, motion, and so on.
If those are all relatively in synch, it brings it to life. It isn’t as if they destroyed the original.
For people interested in history, it really makes the old videos less of a “curiosity” and more relatable and observational.
