The engineering crew of the vessel, i.e. crew members who work in the vessel's engine room, fire room and/or boiler room, so called because they would typically be covered in coal dust during the days of coal-fired steamships.
All of the various groupings of ratings and officers of the US Navy have nicknames. As an engineer I was a Snipe, a mythical creature rarely seen by the rest of the crew, to their joy. As CIC Officer, I was a Twidget, the generic name for a non-Snipe. As an Intelligence Officer I was a Spook.

You were Navy. so was I a LONG LONG time ago I worked at Newport RI. Was the PT gal at women’s Officer training . Developed a new PT program that was fun & healthy. Dance, yoga, tai chi, plus many traditional things. I have no doubt that when I left the new person decided to dump this mentality and go with grunt stuff. sad
