The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

The bill would lead to Juneteenth becoming the 12th federal holiday. It is expected to easily pass the House, which would send it to President Joe Biden for his signature. […]

“Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a major step forward to recognize the wrongs of the past,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “But we must continue to work to ensure equal justice and fulfill the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation and our Constitution.”

The Senate passed the bill under a unanimous consent agreement that expedites the process for considering legislation. It takes just one senator’s objection to block such agreements. …

No one in Congress had the guts to push back. Martin Luther King Day and Black history month are not enough. Now, we have to add a third celebration for Dems to attract votes from an identity group that are their major supporters.

why would we NOT have a holiday celebrating the freeing of the slaves? why did it take this long to make it a holiday?

Well for one thing, Lincoln freed over three million slaves the day he signed the Emancipation Proclamation which was September 22, 1862 and has nothing to do with June 19.

Here's how I tell the story of Juneteenth:

Slavery ended on April 14, 1865, when Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox. However, the North cut the South's access to the Internet, and the message did not reach Texas until June 19th, 1865.

You would not believe the quizzical looks I get from people...lol. My 10YO grandson nailed it: "Opa, there was no internet back then."

Slavery continued to exist, and was legal, in the four border states (Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware), as well as West Virginia and parts of Louisiana for almost six months after June 19, 1865.

Slavery was ended in Missouri in January 1865 and in Maryland in October 1864.

Yeah, and the next step will be reparations. This holiday and the riots are to condition us to accept reparations.

I seem to remember him talking about that, in an almost boastful tone.

The way I hear it slavery ended in 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation and “somehow it took two years to reach Texas”.

But as you point out it was only 2 months after the end of the Civil War.

And Texas was not the last state to still have men held in slavery.

It is a day of freedom (at least in Texas) and should be okay for anyone to celebrate.

STILL need recognition for the Victims of Communism.

They wouldn’t care anyway. Same as they don’t care about the Civil War and the Great Society.

I guess they forget when there was opposition to the MLK Day holiday. Most of those who disagreed with the new holiday believed that state and federal employees had more than enough holidays already. They do.
